How Poor Roof Intersections Trap Freezing Water


Whenever you merge a new roof extension into an existing slope you create a valley. This valley acts as a funnel for all the rain and snow hitting that side of the house. If the contractor simply overlapped the shingles without installing heavy duty underlayment that funnel quickly becomes a weak point.


How do you blend a new roofline with an existing house?


You blend a new roofline with an existing house by stripping the old shingles back several feet to expose the original roof deck. The framing crew then builds a custom saddle or cricket to match the pitch and safely divert water away from the flat intersections. Finally the roofers install continuous ice and water shield membranes across the entire transition zone before laying down the new matching shingles.

When winter hits this valley fills with snow. If the roof slope is shallow the snow sits there and slowly melts during the day. As the temperature drops at night that pooled water freezes solid expanding under the nearest shingle edge and tearing the waterproof barrier apart.


The Danger of Uneven Attic Temperatures


The main driver of ice dams is the temperature difference between the peak of the roof and the lower edges. In older homes the original attic might have terrible insulation while the new addition boasts modern energy efficient spray foam. This creates a thermal imbalance where the old roof melts snow rapidly while the new roof stays freezing cold.


The melted water from the poorly insulated section flows down and hits the cold transition point where it instantly turns to ice. This is exactly why custom home project management must account for the whole house system rather than just focusing on the new footprint.

Why DIY De-Icing Attempts Make the Damage Worse


When water starts dripping through the ceiling drywall the natural reaction is to grab a ladder and a hammer. Homeowners often try to smash the ice dam to let the water drain but this is incredibly dangerous and destructive. Hitting frozen shingles with blunt force shatters the fiberglass matting and guarantees you will need a roof replacement in the spring.


→ A quick tip to remember: Throwing salt pucks onto the roof only corrodes your aluminum gutters and stains the siding without actually fixing the thermal problem.


Trying to melt the dam with a blowtorch or heat gun is a massive fire hazard especially around dry wooden trusses. Temporary fixes do nothing to stop the dam from reforming the very next time it snows.


Proper Flashing and Ventilation Solutions


The only permanent fix is correcting the airflow and waterproofing mechanics in the attic. We ensure continuous soffit venting runs along the eaves to pull cold outdoor air into the space. That air travels up the underside of the roof deck and exhausts out the ridge vent keeping the entire roof surface uniformly cold.


We also apply a thick self adhering rubberized membrane completely covering the roof valleys and the bottom three feet of the eaves. This ice and water shield seals tightly around every roofing nail. Even if water backs up under the shingles the rubber membrane prevents it from rotting the plywood deck below.
